Why Bengaluru Is Called the Garden City 🌿

When someone mentions Bengaluru, the images that may appear are technology companies, startups, traffic, cafés and a bustling city life. There is another side to Bengaluru that makes the city truly special. If you look around carefully you will notice something that has been part of Bengaluru for generations.

Trees, parks, gardens and open green spaces. This is one of the reasons Bengaluru is popularly called the "Garden City of India." Even though Bengaluru has grown rapidly over the years Bengaluru’s connection with greenery has stayed a part of Bengaluru’s identity. How did Bengaluru earn this name? Let us take a look.

🌱 How Did Bengaluru Become the Garden City?

The story goes back hundred years. Bengaluru has traditionally enjoyed a climate and rulers and city planners created gardens, tree‑lined roads, parks and green spaces throughout Bengaluru. One of the important places in this story is Lalbagh Botanical Garden. Lalbagh was started in the century under Hyder Ali and was later expanded by Tipu Sultan. Over the years Lalbagh became a centre for plants and horticulture. Today Lalbagh is one of the famous green spaces in Bengaluru. Then another major landmark appeared. Cubbon Park. Cubbon Park was established in 1870. Became one of Bengaluru’s most important public green spaces. Together Lalbagh and Cubbon Park helped build Bengaluru’s reputation as a city.

🌺 Lalbagh

One of Bengaluru’s Greenest Treasures If you have lived in Bengaluru for some time there is a chance you have heard of Lalbagh. For people Lalbagh is more than just a tourist attraction. Lalbagh is a place where people go for morning walks, exercise, photography, family outings or simply to spend time away from the busy city. The garden is known for its collection of plants and its famous Glass House. The garden also hosts popular flower shows that attract crowds. One of the things about Lalbagh is that you can enter the garden and almost forget that you are in the middle of a huge city. You hear birds see trees walk through green paths and for a while the traffic outside does not seem to matter.

🌳 Cubbon Park

The Green Heart of Bengaluru Another major reason behind Bengaluru’s Garden City identity is Cubbon Park. Located in the heart of Bengaluru Cubbon Park is surrounded by some of Bengaluru’s important roads, buildings and institutions.. Once you enter the park the atmosphere changes completely. Of honking vehicles and crowded streets you find huge trees, walking paths, lawns and plenty of greenery. Cubbon Park was established in 1870. Covers around 197 acres. For Bengaluru residents Cubbon Park is a regular part of their routine. Some come to Cubbon Park for a morning walk. Some come to Cubbon Park to exercise. Some bring their families to Cubbon Park. Others simply sit under a tree in Cubbon Park. Read a book.. Honestly sometimes that is exactly what you need after a stressful week.

🌿 It Is Not Just About Lalbagh and Cubbon Park

When we talk about Bengaluru as the Garden City it is easy to think about Lalbagh and Cubbon Park.. Bengaluru has many other green spaces around the city.

🌳 Bengaluru’s Tree‑Lined Roads

Another reason Bengaluru feels different from other big cities is Bengaluru’s trees. Some older parts of Bengaluru have roads covered by trees on both sides. During summer these trees provide shade. During the monsoon these trees make the streets look fresh and green.. Early in the morning a quiet tree‑lined road can look completely different from the same road during peak traffic. These trees have become such a part of Bengaluru that sometimes we do not even notice how special they are. Until we travel to another city. Then we realise: "Bengaluru really does have a lot of trees.”

🌦️ The City’s Climate Also Helps

Bengaluru’s pleasant climate has also helped Bengaluru’s greenery. Bengaluru sits at an elevation than many major Indian cities and historically Bengaluru’s climate made it comfortable for growing a wide variety of plants and trees. This combination of climate, gardens, parks, avenues and greenery helped create the image of Bengaluru as a garden city. Course Bengaluru has changed a lot. The Bengaluru of today is much larger, busier and more crowded than it was decades ago.. Bengaluru’s greenery is still an important part of Bengaluru’s identity.

🏙️ The Garden City vs. Today’s Bengaluru

There is a contrast when you think about Bengaluru today. On one side you have IT parks, traffic, flyovers, apartment buildings, startups and busy roads. On the side you have Lalbagh, Cubbon Park, huge old trees, lakes, neighbourhood parks and gardens. Both sides are Bengaluru.. That is what makes Bengaluru interesting.

🌱 Why Green Spaces Matter

The Garden City name is not about how beautiful Bengaluru looks. Green spaces are important for city life. Trees provide shade. Help make streets more comfortable. Parks give people places to walk and exercise. Gardens give people space to relax. Green areas also provide habitats for birds, insects and other forms of wildlife.. Perhaps most importantly green spaces give people a break from concrete and traffic. After spending hours looking at buildings and screens walking through a park can feel surprisingly refreshing.
